Dear Borsha,

I'll be honest — I sat here for a bit trying to figure out how to start this without it sounding either too formal or too dramatic. So I'll just say it plainly: happy birthday. I hope today treats you exactly the way you deserve to be treated, which is very well.

We haven't kept in touch the way we used to, and if I'm being fair, that's on both of us — nobody's fault, just life pulling us in different directions. But every so often you cross my mind, usually followed by a memory that makes me smile before I even know why. That's a pretty good sign someone still matters.

I'm not going to pretend this is a grand romantic gesture, because it isn't — you're my friend, and this is just me making sure that on one specific day of the year, you get reminded that you're appreciated, thought of, and (this part is important) allowed to eat cake without guilt today. Calories don't count on your birthday. That's science. I checked. Twice.

So however this year has gone, however far apart we've drifted — I hope it's been kind to you, and I hope the year ahead is kinder. You don't need to reply to this.
